Handcrafted in Floyd, Virginia
By June & Dale Holliday — retired teacher, twenty years of alpacas, final shearing
"Dale bent that first heart in maybe five minutes. Just from the wire that was lying around. A handful of wool stuffed inside, hung on the cherry tree. Two weeks later the wrens had picked it clean — every strand gone, headed straight for the toolshed roof. I watched it from my rocker every morning. That's where it all started."
What makes the Nesting Heart special
Real alpaca wool Softer and finer than cotton, twine, or synthetic fibers. Birds pull it out strand by strand and weave it straight into the nest.
Refillable — season after season When the birds have picked it clean, just stuff more wool into the frame. One heart, many nesting seasons.
Hand-bent steel wire frame Heavy-gauge wire, bent into a heart by hand. Weatherproof, rustic, looks beautiful in the garden — even before the first bird shows up.
Hang it anywhere Branch, fence post, railing, porch beam — wherever birds already come by. No tools, no drilling, no hardware.
No power, no batteries Hang it up, done. The birds do the rest themselves — no luring, no training, no waiting period.
Protects against fiber entanglement Synthetic fibers stay rigid in the nest and can injure nestlings. Alpaca wool decomposes safely — zero risk for chicks.

June & Dale Holliday
June taught elementary school in Floyd, Virginia for thirty years. Dale has kept a small alpaca herd on their ten acres since 2006. The first Nesting Heart was a retirement gift — Dale bent it from spare fencing wire in a few minutes, stuffed it with a handful of fleece, and hung it on the cherry tree. It's still there. Still a little crooked.
🌿 Expert perspective
"Fiber entanglement is something wildlife rehabilitators see every spring — nestlings with synthetic threads wrapped around legs or necks, collected by a parent bird from a nearby yard. Natural fibers like alpaca wool give way and decompose safely in the nest. Synthetic fibers don't. That's the entire difference."

What you get
- Real, undyed alpaca wool — no synthetics, no plastic, no dyes
- Hand-bent steel wire frame — rustic, weatherproof, built for year-round outdoor use
- Refillable for years — not a disposable product; just add fresh wool every spring
- Attracts chickadees, titmice, wrens & bluebirds — native nesting birds that seek soft nest-lining material
- From the Holliday herd's final shearing — twenty years of care, this batch is the last
This batch is the last one. June and Dale are moving this summer — smaller place, closer to family near Roanoke, now that the grandkids are coming. The alpacas go to a neighbor's farm down the road. Dale's workshop gets packed up. These Nesting Hearts are made from the final shearing of their herd. When they're gone, there won't be more. Not because something sad happened — but because the next chapter is starting.
