Give your backyard birds what they need most in summer: water.
Summers are getting hotter every year. Natural water sources are disappearing. And most backyards don't have a single spot where birds can drink or cool off. But that's exactly what's critical in the peak of summer: birds regulate their body temperature by bathing. Without a water source, they overheat in extreme heat โ especially fledglings that have just left the nest.
This copper-coated bird bath gives them exactly that: a safe place to drink, bathe and cool down. Designed by Earl Calloway (74), a craftsman from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina who has spent over 40 years building everything wild birds need to survive.
๐ฆ Why this bird bath is different
Copper-coated surface โ naturally algae-resistant. Copper has proven antimicrobial properties: it naturally inhibits the growth of algae and bacteria in water. That means cleaner water for the birds โ and less maintenance for you. At the same time, the slightly textured copper surface gives birds a secure grip, unlike slippery ceramic or plastic.
Graduated bowl with shallow edges โ Works like a natural creek bank: small birds like chickadees and wrens stand on the rim in the shallow water and cool off. Larger species like robins and cardinals wade into the deeper middle to bathe. Every species finds its depth โ no bird has to drown.
Ground stake for easy placement โ Push it into the ground and you're done. Stands firm and stable in the lawn or garden bed. The elevated position gives birds a clear sightline to spot predators โ making it much harder for cats to sneak up.
Textured, ornamental rim โ The decorations along the rim aren't just for looks โ they give birds a solid grip when landing and provide an escape route for insects like bees and butterflies that have fallen into the water.
Easy to clean โ Smooth interior bowl with no corners or crevices. Thanks to the copper coating, significantly less algae builds up compared to ceramic or plastic. Still, Earl recommends: rinse with fresh water once a week.
โ ๏ธ Why this matters right now
More birds die in summer than in winter โ not from cold, but from dehydration and overheating. Paved surfaces, dried-up puddles, no natural water left in residential areas. A single bird bath in your yard can become a lifeline for an entire neighborhood on hot days.
On scorching August afternoons, Earl has counted up to 14 different bird species at his bird bath within a single hour. "They come because they have to. Not because they want to."

๐ก Earl's care tip
"Set it in partial shade, near some bushes โ so the birds can duck for cover if a hawk shows up. Change the water daily. The copper keeps algae in check, but a quick rinse once a week never hurts."
